Frequently Asked Questions

I'm trying to decide if I want to leave my current career or not. Do you help with that?

Yes, absolutely. I frame the question, “Should I say or should I go?” and I work with people from the question through getting hired in the new industry or just on the question itself.

What package works best for that depends on you and your individual situation. I have had people do a single session and get everything they needed, and others we worked through a 6-month package. You can find information about both on my coaching page.

I have decided I want to leave my current industry, but I can't figure out what I want to do for my next career. Do you help with that?

Yes, I do coach people on their “What next,” and I also have strategies for if you ultimately decide that you want to try a few options to see what happens instead of picking one thing to focus on. Both options work well!

What package works best for discovering your “What next” depends heavily on you, your individual situation, and what work you might have already done exploring options. I have had people do a single session and get everything they needed, and others we worked through a 6-month package. You can find information about both on my coaching page.

Do I need to know exactly what I want to do next to start my career pivot?

No, definitely not.

For some people, it’s really helpful to pick one target for their next career. It works better for how their brain processes information. For others, picking one target for their career pivot just doesn’t work. I have strategies for both paths. Both work. Neither is better than the other.

Taking this approach typically requires more guidance so I recommend folks who aren’t sure and want to work with me to go with either a call pack (3 or 6 sessions) or a package (everything from monthly “Coach On Call” to my Framework Coaching at 3, 6, or 12 months). You can see information about these options on my coaching page.

I know I want to change careers and I have been trying everything to make it happen, but it's not working. Can you help?

Yes! I absolutely work with folks who have already made the decision to leave, have their “what next” picked out, and have been actively working on their pivot. Kudos to you for getting here!

Usually at this point, I am helping people with practical tactics around their materials (resume, cover letter, LinkedIn, portfolio, work samples, etc.), their job search strategy, and their interview technique.

Depending on exactly where the struggle is, sometimes it’s a single session (me under the hood of your career pivot with a wrench saying “There’s your problem”) to a 3 or 6 month coaching package.

You can see information about these options on my coaching page.

I already pivoted by myself. Now I am looking for my next role in the same industry, and it's going terribly. Do you help with that?

Yes! I absolutely do.

The “one post pivot” role is an exceptionally difficult one to get, and there’s virtually no visibility on this topic. You can’t just google it.

This job search is difficult even if you operated off pivot principles in your first search. However, most people who pivot alone don’t necessarily understand what worked about their process the first time around so it’s hard to make the slight adjustments needed for a one post pivot.

Usually, this requires more than a single session because of how difficult this search is so I would recommend a 6 pack of sessions or a coaching package. You can see information about these options on my coaching page.

I already pivoted by myself, and I just got laid off. Do you help with this?

Yes, I do, and I am so sorry to hear this. Layoffs suck.

Getting laid off can be difficult to bounce back from, mindset wise (what I typically call “ethos”), but that is multiplied when coming from a pivot. The first role after a layoff also can be difficult strategy wise, and there’s research that shows it’s often hard to recover from one – related to salary and seniority.

I have specific packages for layoffs that are half price what I would normally charge. You can see them on my coaching page here.

What if I am not a career pivoter? Can you still help me?

Yes, absolutely!

I do help traditional job seekers, and two quick thoughts about that:

1) This job market is very difficult, and it helps to have someone who lives / breathes / eats this market in your corner.

2) More and more frequently, traditional job seekers are treated like pivoters in the process. For example, if you’re going from manager to director, hybrid to remote, in person to remote, from one role to another in the same industry, or the same role in different industries – people are more likely than ever to think about you like a pivoter.

Why? I have lots of opinions but probably not best shared in FAQ.

I can work with traditional job seekers on all packages, and you can see them on my coaching page here.

Can you help me find my dream job?

Sadly, no, I cannot.

I don’t believe in dream jobs. Or good companies – I believe in good people.

There are many folks who coach on the above two ideas, and I am happy to refer you! Message me through the chat, and I will send you some websites to review.

Wow, this is all super fancy, but I would love for someone to update my resume. Do you do that?

I don’t do resume updates outside of a coaching package. But you are in luck! Ed Herzog is your person! You can set up an appointment with him here.

I've given it a lot of thought, and I don't want to work for someone else anymore. Do you help people start their own businesses?

I do actually. I help people who are either building their business alongside their 9 to 5 as they make the move to transition out, as well as from unemployment or from home care duties.

You can start a strategy session here if you want to talk through your idea with me or look at my coaching packages here.

Do you guarantee results?

No, I can’t guarantee results. A lot of folks who say they do don’t actually when you read their fine print.

No one knows exactly what’s going to happen, least of all me. Sometimes folks decide they don’t want to pivot or get a new job. Sometimes that’s because they get a raise and a new boss, and sometimes it’s because change is scary. Sometimes people want a new job but turn down every interview they get so… maybe not? I can help people with a lot of things, but I can’t be them in the interview. There’s a nearly infinite number of factors in play.

So though I can’t guarantee an outcome, I can promise you that I will care for you and your possible new life as thoughtfully and faithfully as I would my own.

I believe that the reason we succeed is because we never give up. And if you’re in so am I. LFG!
